Orillia Opera House History

The Orillia Opera House Story

In 1978 the structure was designated under the Ontario Heritage Act

Today, the Orillia Opera House brings us amazing performances from local Canadian talent. In the beginning (1895) comedy, theatre and entertainment was the furthest from the services offered at the Orillia Opera House. Would you believe this amazing historic building once served as Orillia’s police headquarters, jail and municipal office?

After about 20 years (1914) a tragic fire engulfed the building, destroying the roof and the majority of the interior.

The Tragically Hip Canada Day Weekend at Burls Creek

The Hip is a Canadian rock band born in Kingston Ontario, in 1983. They are performing at Burls Creek July 1, 2012 at 1:30 PM. It will be a 2 day event that will showcase their north patriot love. The tour is to celebrate the bi-centennial of the War of 1812.

Burls Creek provides 100’s of acres for this 2 day event in the heart of cottage country, making it an ideal venue for celebrating Canada’s birthday.

About The City of Orillia

Orillia History

Once upon a time there was a small city about 1 ½ hours north of Toronto. It was a city many referred to as The Sunshine City, found in between Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching.

Thousands of years ago Iroquois and Huron native Indians settled in this area. Evidence suggests native Indians lived on this great land by Fishing, hunting and trading.

Today, the Sunshine City has a lot to offer tourists looking for cultural attractions, festivals and plenty of waterfront fun. Orillia is located about 12 kms from Casino Rama which is the area’s biggest employer.

  3. Celebrate the birth of 2013 at Casino Rama- On New Years Eve 2012 Stone Gate Inn will be running a complimentary Shuttle service for guests only. The service runs once per hour, includes deluxe breakfast, complimentary hor d’oeuvres in the Fireside Lounge and a complimentary bottle of champagne.
  4. Orillia Winter Carnival- This exciting Winter Carnival has been a part of Orillia for at least 60 years. Some of the events include Dog Sled Races, Shivers Ice Castle, Ball Hockey Tournament, Horse/Sleigh Rides, Helicopter Rides and much more.
